A creamy and crunchy homemade green bean casserole that’s perfect for family dinners and potlucks.
Ingredients

- 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
- 2 tablespoons butter or oil
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup crispy fried onions
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Blanch green beans in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then transfer to ice water to cool.
- In a skillet, sauté onions and mushrooms in butter or oil until golden.
- Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir to combine.
- Add milk and stir until the sauce thickens.
- Fold in the blanched green beans and season with salt and pepper.
- Transfer to a baking dish and bake until bubbly, about 20-25 minutes.
- Top with crispy fried onions during the last 10 minutes of baking.
Notes
For best results, use fresh green beans and don’t skip the fried onion topping. You can prepare the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it before baking.
